Der Zarewitsch is loosely based on the true story of the Russian Tsar, Peter the Great's (1682-1725) wayward son Alexei who ran off with his mistress and ultimately was killed by his own father. The Operetta changes the story at the end where Alexei leaves his mistress and becomes Tsar.

Coincidentally in 1934 - in the biopic "Therese Krones", Marta Eggerth portrayed the famed Austrian actress (1801-1830), and the beloved tenor Leo Slezak (1873-1946) played the role of the Austrian poet, writer and theater director Ferdinand Raimund (1790-1836) for whom the Theater is named. He had helped Theresa Krones in her meteoric rise to fame
